How to Have a Miracle

Years ago, I took a ten-month leadership and development course and was given an initial homework assignment to do “one anonymous good deed a day for a month”.

Wondering when the actual leadership and development part of the program was going to start, I dutifully hurled myself into the assignment.

Embracing “simple” good deeds the first week… like leaving a little money in a pile of bananas at the supermarket, picking up trash and paying the toll for another car at the toll booth (yes, it was that long ago) was fun and easy.

When that got repetitive, I was nudged to expand my “good deed” repertoire.  I started looking everywhere for ways to delight random strangers or friends alike.

I left love notes on subway cars, put bouquets of flowers on doorsteps, and sent loving kindness to strangers on the street.

Suddenly, one good deed a day was simply not enough!  It became an unintended full time job.

I still waited for the leadership part of the course to begin, but in the meantime, I was having a darn good time.

It was about this time that “miracles” starting occurring…

Like when our Maine vacation was rained out and within 48 hours notice I gleaned 2 frequent flyer tickets to Italy when they were supposedly blacked out.  Despite usually oversold summer flights, we garnered two entire rows of seats, sleeping like babies on the overnight leg.

The exquisite Aldrovandi Palace Hotel happened to be running a one-day, last-minute internet deal that made it cheaper than the local hostel (and included a $50 breakfast!) and a random email to an acquaintance bestowed on us her Florence apartment.

We walked into the best seats of restaurants that were purportedly booked for months, strangers took us to local “secret” spots and it seemed all of Italy was conspiring to delight us.

Is this a result of doing a month of good deeds?

Or just “coincidence”?

What do you think?

Read any “manifestation experts’” advice and you’ll be advised to ‘raise your vibration’ in order to let the abundance of the universe in.  Without even knowing about “manifestation experts” back then, I was riding a crazy high vibe from this practice of “one good deed a day”.

It seems the Universe liked it too.

Turns out, doing good deeds is one of the best ways to raise that vibration.

I forgot about that practice ‘til this morning when I wondered what I could offer on Substack that might be helpful to others.

I asked the Universe for some guidance and my pen wrote “Do Good Deeds”.

Ok! – I’m in….and can’t wait to see what happens this time!

Maybe this offering to you is day one…

What if you spent the next week or month doing one good deed a day?  I mean, it can’t hurt.

I’d love to know what happens!

And just now, a sign from the Bhagavad Gita ….

“Sometimes it’s better to ignore all the spiritual teachings and just do Karma Yoga (selfless action) which cleans the mind and frees us from the ego.”

Here’s to your fun and miracles!

With Love, Diane
